Smackwater Jack Quincy Jones A&M SP-3037, 1974
Smackwater Jack album cover

This album is a classic compilation that belongs on any funk soundtrack collector's shelves for two reasons: Quincy Jones' classic TV themes to Hikky Burr and Ironside both appear on here. As an added incentive, you get the theme from The Anderson Tapes, never issued on LP, that's also a solid funk theme. The version of Hikky Burr on here isn't as raw and funky as the original 45, but is still tight and an excellent dancefloor mover, and Ironside is always a winner. The rest of the LP moves away into smoother jazz-funk territory.

Overall Rating: 4
