Match Of The Day Mike Vickers Pye 7N.25534, 1970
Match Of The Day album cover

UK soundtrack collectors will be well aware of the classic sports theme 'Match of the day', and will probably be wondering what the hell it's doing in a funk soundtrack review. OK, let's take a step back. The credited band, Offside, is actually library veteran Mike Vickers, a seasoned session musician with several notable UK funk tracks to his name. So if we forget the A side, let's check the flip, and it turns out to be a killer downtempo hip-hoppy funk number, with a groovy opening guitar/vibes break that's ripe for sampling, then into a great funky brassy number. Hard to find and damn good!
