I
WAS THERE & I SAW THE WHOLE THANG
PART
TWO

Dear Boys & Girls, Ladies & Gentlemen, Players & Playees
of the viewing audience:
This is a little thang I would like to subtitle as: BLOW ... MY ... MIND....
I reiterate that in my humble opinion as a movie usher that the biggest
& greatest blaxploitation movies back-in-the-day were:
1. Shaft
2. Superfly
3. (tie) The Mack & Across 110th Street
The criteria I use is how did these movies appeal to the masses of afro-americans
in the United States of America. Well ... judging from the outrageously
long lines of people casting their dollar-votes at the box office, in
addition, to the mass hysteria they created in the black communities all
over America ... they win!
Literally,.........................these movies BLEW NIGGAS' MINDS!!!
From my observations these movies changed the way niggas walked their
walk & talked their talk. For instance, Superfly had niggas running around
with their hair long, fried, dyed, & laid to the side. They were also
putting Rolls-Royce Kits on anything that moved, especially, Volkswagons.
I still chuckle thinking about seeing a Volkswagon pull into Forest Park
in the summertime kitted out with big headlights & running boards. (I
am digressing down memory lane).
But more seriously, these movies changed the way the Motion Picture Industry
presented its products to the general viewing public because as I have
heretoforementioned before the Blaxploitation Explosion, movies always
came as a double or triple feature. The only movies I can think of that
could match their frenzy is the James Bond Movie Series. I think( but
once again that part of my memory is fuzzy since these events happened
over 30 years ago) 'Goldfinger' & 'Thunderball' came by themselves & I
considered them to be contemporaries ( Hey, gang! Help me out here & research
the facts-I am too busy in D.C.)
Lastly, other Blaxploitation movies that get honorable mentions for BLOWING
A NIGGAS MIND are:
BUCK & THE PREACHER
SHAFT'S BIG SCORE
SHAFT IN AFRICA
SUPERFLY TNT (not a real good movie but it packed the theaters)
SLAUGHTER
CLEOPATRA JONES
BLACULA
THREE TOUGH GUYS
COTTON COMES TO HARLEM
COME BACK CHARLESTON BLUE
UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT
LET'S DO IT AGAIN
Plus some other minor movies ... that I can not think of at the time.
Well, next time the subject is: IF
YA SLOW, YA BLOW -
the heavy, heavy theme movies that seemed to have been censored
via limited playing dates.
